We’re looking for an enthusiastic and compassionate leader to join our team as the Interim Director of Program Quality and Impact.

Role Overview

Reporting to the Vice President (VP) of Impact & Quality, the Interim Director drives excellence in Right To Play’s programming. You’ll lead and mentor the Program Quality (PQ) team, supporting the implementation of global program strategies and theories of change. Your focus will be on improving learning and wellbeing outcomes for children and young people.

Key Responsibilities for Interim Director

1. Team leadership and management (40% of the time)

As the interim director, you’ll play a pivotal role in shaping the PQ team’s vision and goals. Here’s what this entails:

  • Vision and Collaboration:
    • Develop a clear and compelling vision for the global PQ team, engaging them to achieve ambitious yet achievable goals.
    • Foster a collaborative, high-performance culture within the PQ team, adhering to wider Program Quality and Impact (PQI) team principles.
    • Collaborate with technical specialists to create strategic and operational plans for the PQ team.
  • Resource Allocation and Tracking:
    • Ensure appropriate resourcing for the global PQ team.
    • Accurately track levels of effort across the team.
    • Regularly assess organizational programming capacities and provide strategic and technical capacity strengthening.
  • Mentorship and Professional Development:
    • Provide ongoing leadership and mentorship to the team.
    • Conduct regular one-on-one meetings (121s), support professional development, and uphold effective ways of working.

2. Strategic Program Development (20% of Time)

Your strategic acumen will shape program development. Here’s how you’ll contribute:

  • Alignment with Global Goals:
    • Ensure core programs align with the goals set in the global strategic plan and the Theory of Change.
    • Integrate gender equality and social inclusion (GESI) considerations across strategies and programs.
    • Collaborate with the Impact team to align program and project Theories of Change (ToCs) with relevant indicators.
  • Decision-Making and Prioritization:
    • Lead decision-making related to new programs/projects, involving technical specialists as needed.
    • Analyze trends and changes in programmatic priorities with the advocacy and policy team.
    • Identify and implement key program development initiatives.

3. Program Quality (20% of Time)

Your commitment to program quality will have an impact. Here’s what you’ll focus on:

  • Assessing Quality:
    • Develop and implement tools to assess program quality (e.g., quality checklists, program audit tools).
    • Regularly track program and project quality, providing feedback for continuous improvement.
    • Collaborate with the Impact team and the Global Country Office support team.
  • Strategic Inputs and Partnerships:
    • Provide programmatic insights to support executive decision-making on funding priorities.
    • Collaborate with the Research & Innovation Specialist on pilot projects.
    • Identify suitable consortium partners for major grants.

4. Internal and External Representation (15% of Time)

Your role extends beyond the organization. Here’s how you’ll represent Right to Play:

  • Senior Management Team:
    • Serve as a member of the Senior Management Team of the PQI Unit.
    • Ensure quality, evidence, and learning are integral to decision-making.
  • Strategic Partnerships:
    • Build strategic partnerships with key universities, research institutions, and international NGOs.

5. Qualifications and Competencies for the Interim Director

  • Passionate Advocate: You believe in the power of playful learning and can communicate this passion effectively to inspire others.
  • Leadership Experience: You have 7 years of relevant professional experience, progressively advancing in leadership roles within international development at a global level.
  • Education Background: A master’s degree in subjects related to education, gender equality, social inclusion, and children and young people’s protection and psychosocial wellbeing (or equivalent practical experience).
  • Knowledge and Skills:
    • Strong understanding of issues related to education, gender equality, and wellbeing in development and humanitarian program design, planning, and implementation.
    • Analytical and conceptual skills for strategic thinking and translating it into practical operational program planning.
    • Proven ability to lead diverse teams effectively, including mentoring and coaching.
    • I have lived experience working in a country context relevant to RTP’s strategy.
    • Familiarity with international education, gender equality, and wellbeing bodies and policies.
    • Experience with multi-country projects funded by governments and foundations.
    • Active engagement with relevant global/local development networks.
  • Culture and Leadership:
    • Demonstrates RTP’s culture code.
    • Communicates a compelling vision that generates excitement and commitment to the organization’s mission.
    • Champions continuous improvement and organizational learning.
    • Adaptable and skilled in change management processes.
  • Technical Skills:
    • Program design and management.
    • Funding proposal development.
    • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Teams.
    • Coaching and mentoring experience.
    • Financial management.
    • Fluency in spoken and written English and fluency in Arabic, French, or Portuguese is an asset.
