Participatory Plant Breeding Officer

The job holder supports the ASNRM Manager in implementing participatory plant breeding and agrobiodiversity management-related activities within the project, working closely with other implementing partners.

Main Tasks and Responsibilities for Participatory Plant Breeding Officer:

  1. Technical Support and Guidance:
    • Provide technical support and guidance on participatory plant breeding and agrobiodiversity management for the project.
    • Execute capacity-building activities on participatory plant breeding (e.g., participatory variety selection, enhancement, or development) using the FFS methodology.
  2. Training Content and Materials:
    • Assist in preparing training content and materials related to participatory plant breeding, agrobiodiversity management, and farmer-managed seed systems.
    • Collaborate with FFS to identify priorities for plant breeding and nutrition based on farmers’ needs.
  3. Monitoring and Reporting:
    • Gather and consolidate project data regularly, promoting knowledge management and learning.
    • Lead data gathering with local partners for monitoring and evaluation.
    • Ensure data quality control and document best practices.
  4. Country-Level Coordination:
    • Plan and lead thematic working groups at the country level.
    • Participate in country-implementing team meetings and provide specialized expertise.

 

General Duties for Participatory Plant Breeding Officer:

  • Attend regular departmental meetings and provide feedback, especially on other key PELUM issues and events impacting the departmental staff.
  • Actively participate in planning, budgeting, monitoring, and reporting on PELUM Uganda activities. Advise staff, board members, and PELUM members on participatory plant breeding (PPB)-related matters.
  • Collaborate on fundraising activities with other project teams, aligning with project implementation plans.

Person Specifications:

  • Education:
    • Bachelor’s degree in agricultural sciences, natural resource management, agroecology, or related fields. A postgraduate qualification in a related field is advantageous.
  • Industry Experience:
    • Minimum 4 to 5 years of experience, preferably in participatory plant breeding (PVE, PVS, and PVD), farmer-managed seed systems development, and food security within the context of climate change.
    • Previous work with Farmer Field School methodology and agricultural research institutions/breeders.
    • Strong understanding of Uganda’s agriculture sector, including relevant policies and programs, and farmer-managed seed systems.
    • Experience from a gender transformation perspective.
    • Organizational skills related to seed fairs, domestication, conservation of wild and semi-wild species, and novel cooking methods.

Technical Skills:

  • Effective written and oral communication, advisory skills, and facilitation abilities.
  • Proven ability to build relationships with diverse stakeholders at local, national, and global levels.
  • Demonstrated results delivery in complex multi-disciplinary structures, with the ability to prioritize work under pressure and meet deadlines.

Personal Qualities:

  • Multitasking, attention to detail, critical reasoning, problem-solving, and proactive mindset.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Capacity to analyze national, regional, and local issues related to project implementation and core values.
  • Ability to articulate PPB-related information and provide sound guidance.
  • Efficient and effective communication.
